4 years ago in a gym changeroom, a mom shared a tip with me that changed my life.
At the time my girls were 1 and 3 and both in the gym daycare, and she had seen me balancing and trying to do it all. But this one day I was feeling overwhelmed and emotional and just getting to the gym felt hard. And clearly she could see it.
She told me that all I needed to focus on were the next 15 minutes. That’s it. Just the things that needed my attention now.
That advice is advice I’ve shared many times since. Because I know the impact it made in my life. It helps me to stay focussed and live in the moment and it especially helps to alleviate that feeling of overwhelm we can often get swept up in.
And so I thought maybe, you could use that perspective, too.
Especially right now.
15 minutes at a time. That’s ALL you need to focus on.
Yes I understand that you can see the whole big picture and you’re a multitasking wonder. But when things feel out of your control and you feel a loss of motivation to do anything, sometimes it’s because we don’t know where to start. You have so many things to do, it can seem astronomical at times. I get it. I’ve been there.
And maybe your to-do list stresses you out. So why not make it a ”things accomplished” list instead? There will always be things to be done. So then it becomes a list of ongoing tasks. But for a moment, close your eyes and feel that feeling of accomplishing it all. Feel that happiness and then get started!
If we look at it from a different perspective, we can see clearly what needs our attention now. And we can happily focus on that project or task knowing that it has our full attention and that it’s the only thing we need to be focusing on, right now. All the other things we have will still be there. But they can wait. They too will get their time.
So, take a deep breath and then smile. And then carry on, 15 minutes at a time.
Wishing you more peace, balance, happiness, vibrant health and lasting love.
